Maybe it's my privileged, sunny, middle-class Leave It To Beaver upbringing talking, but I just LOVE this song. I think it's an absolute laugh riot. Probably because I was particularly picky with impossibly high standards when it came to Husband Material, and consequently I have never once had to deal with any of the complaints thus listed in this song. Thus far, anyway. (I keed! I keed! My Favorite Husband is a Very Good Person. Honest.)

I particularly like how the song slowly grows from a quiet admission of the occasional complaint to a giant, increasingly loud and snarky litany of sins. My favorite line: "You get to know life when married to a lowlife". Okay, Ira, you moved pretty close to Cole Porter with that one. The snarkiness is nicely balanced with the occasional plaintive "But if I left him..." lines, and culminates with the very funny tortured admission that it turns out she loves "the dirty so-and-so" after all.

I wonder what is it about "list" songs that are so appealing? Good lists, anyway; I don't suppose anyone is going to be setting my shopping lists to music anytime soon. Then again, G&S set to music a list of people "whose loss will be a distinct gain to society at large" and musical theater has never looked back, so who knows? Just remember the ice cream. Mojo likes ice cream.
